Air pollution

"Air pollution is causing more deaths than HIV or malaria combined," Kandeh Yumkella, director general of the U.N. Industrial Development Organization, told a conference in Oslo trying to work out new U.N. development goals for 2030.

Most victims from indoor pollution, caused by wood fires and primitive stoves in developing nations, were women and children.

click on link:

APES :
From Gasland
your summary should explain the process of fracking, the pollutants used, the environmental concerns, the government policies around it and your general opinion of it.

Students absent for "Gasland" should watch this instead and write a summary on it for me- just like you did for "tapped" the water documentary. Tell me what it was about and your general opinion of what you saw/ learned.

AP Environmental science videos to watch over Spring Break

Hey- I hope all of you are having a great break- It's a beautiful day today, so I hope you are outside enjoying it right now.

Here are few videos to watch during your down time.
Take notes to use on you quizzes

All together it's under 1 hour 45 min.

The first one is about the Gulf/ BP oil spill it's about 50 minutes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U454HFEdRMQ

Focus on;
 -The environmental effects of the oil as well as the dispersant they used to try to clean it up- What problems does/ has the dispersant caused?
-The duration of the spill and the causes for it taking so long to shut down.
- Be sure to take notes on as much as possible- the more the better!

The next couple are short; Revisiting Chernobyl is about 12 minutes

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/science/jan-june11/chernobyl_03-29.html

Can coal be Earth friendly? is about  27 minutes
http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/515/

pay attention to mechanisms to "clean" coal  and what happens to the wastes overall from burning coal.

Lastly:

PICK A CLIP! or READ a post! keep the video short, under 10 minutes!

Watch a clip on any energy disaster/ concern and then tell me about in one page (just one side!).

There are a ton on Fukushima meltdown, like this one;
http://grist.org/news/fukushima-meltdown-appears-to-have-sickened-american-infants/

As well as on Chernobyl- this one is part of a series on the children of Belarus still suffering from the radiation exposure caused by the Chernobyl meltdown of 1986!
