AP BIOLOGY PROJECT DUE 4/30/14 YOU HAVE 4 WEEKS! IT CAN NOT BE LATE!

DUE 4/30/14
BIOME, ECOSYSTEM AND  BODY SYSTEM PROJECT- this is worth a project grade, a homework grade, a classwork grade and a quiz grade! you have
4 weeks to complete it so I expect it to be on time and AMAZING!

You will explain the characteristic of your biome-You will research your biome and then include information regarding: moisture, temps, elevation, resources available/ exploited, degree of biodiversity present, human presence, etc.. This can be accomplished via cues within the diorama as well as with clear, neat, identifying notes on the perimeter of the diorama.

Create your diorama-  It should be at least the size of an adult shoe box! It must contain all of the key elements found in your assigned biome. Representative plants( 4 species) and animals (4 species) should be present along with  appropriate geography and temperature cues.
At least one obvious food chain of 3 organisms should be seen in your system. It should be creative, colorful, well organized and look like an actual ecosystem.

Highlight one animal and one plant species-  you will further investigate one plant and one animal species you have in your diorama to discern what adaptations they have to help them be successful in this environment.
You will identify one physical and one behavioral adaption for your organisms. You will then explain at least one body/ plant system per organism that is associated with or responsible for the function of the adaptations. YOU WILL NEED visual aids for this but they can not be electronic in nature.

Obtain 2 articles from a reputable source (nat. geo, nature, scientific american, nytimes, natural history, etc.) that discuss your assigned Biome. One should be on climate change in your biome and the other should be about a different environmental issue.
These are to be READ  and then summarized so you can explain them during your presentation. You will need to hand in the hard copies of the articles with your project. Your summaries should be written on a large index card and affixed to the back of your diorama. (this will help you when you are presenting!)

Special note- visual aids are not to be electronic in nature! Imbed them into your diorama or make them an extension to either side, even a poster board will do, but no ppts to assist you with the presentation of information!!

OK, so I know you guys had trouble finding cells going through the stages of mitosis, but the cells were actually working just fine! Mrs. Faulkner and I did a couple of slides after school just for funzies and both of our cells showed mitotic division.

We did have to look closely at every cell we came across, but it was possible

Errors that probably occurred: cells weren't thinned out enough, cells weren't rinsed well enough and/or not enough time was spent going through the many cells on your slide.

I left some root growing in class so we can make another attempt some time this week, even if it's just me doing a demo and showing you.

* Clayton: your phone takes a much better pix! This image looks better on my phone, but in case you can't tell what it is, it's a cell in metaphase- we also saw prophase and telophase.

AP BIO HOMEWORK and AP Environmental Science homework for the 3-14 weekend

What a difference a day (or two) makes!
This is a picture of a garlic clove I placed in water last night so I would know whether or not we'd have enough root to use for the lab. There was no visible growth this morning, but tonight there are visible roots. We only need
2 mm worth of root system so we should be able to proceed with the lab on Monday :) ! Hard to believe that a dried up garlic clove can spring back to life so quickly!

TO ALL:
We've been discussing ordering water bottles in a couple of my classes. I'd also like to order cotton totes (for groceries, etc.).  If we get 100 people that are interested, we can get both for around 5$.
We can create our own design, scan it and have it placed on both items.  If you are interested please check out this site and let me know what you think.  check out the tote bags as well

WATCH THIS KAHN VIDEO:
Take notes as needed, if you're pretty good at this you may not need any notes.
It's 28 minutes so you may need to find a good place to pause and break it up a bit.
